PTP sees 10% volume growth to surpass 12 million teu
The Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) became the first Malaysian port to handle more 12 million of containers annually in 2024.
The joint venture between Malaysia’s MMC Corp and Maersk’s APM Terminals 12.25 million teu in 2022 up 9.8% from the 11.2 million it handled in the previous year.
PTP was a beneficiary of congestion at the neighbouring key transhipment hub Singapore in May/June last year as the rerouting of services from the Red Sea via the Cape of Good Hope resulted in the bunching of vessel arrivals.
PTP Chief Executive Officer, Mark Hardiman, commented, “What is particularly rewarding about this achievement is our ability to maintain stable and strong productivity levels, even amid surging volumes. This stability is crucial and adds significant value for our customers.
“It has always been our commitment to help our customers achieve their schedule reliability, especially during a time of global supply chain disruptions, and we are proud to deliver this with no congestion.”
In July last year PTP handled its highest monthly volume ever of 1.12 million teu.
Looking ahead Hardiman said: “Our goal is to sustain this momentum and achieve even greater milestones in 2025 and beyond. We have made extensive preparations for the future, focusing not only on port asset upgrades and infrastructure enhancements, but also on advancing our environmental, social and governance (ESG) agenda, strengthening safety policies and driving our digitalisation strategies.”
PTP will be one of the key hubs for Maersk’s Gemini Cooperation alliance with Hapag-Lloyd, which starts operations next month. Gemini plans to operate a hub and spoke network based around transhipment ports where one of the two lines has a terminal operating presence.
