Possible trade deal with India not likely to include U.S. dairy
An ag leader says a possible trade deal between the U.S. and India will likely help sell products like fruits, nuts, and ethanol, but not dairy products.
Farmers for Free Trade Executive Director Brian Kuehl tells Brownfield that India had a trade delegation in the U.S. this week. “They’ve had folks on the ground negotiating, hopefully, a new trade deal. We haven’t seen the details on what they’re negotiating.”
Kuehl says it’s hard to see how the U.S. can get more access to the Indian dairy market. “India has more dairy cows than any other country on the planet, but that’s because every Indian has, you know, one or two dairy cows, or most families do, so they don’t have the big concentrated dairies. They’ve got a very decentralized dairy industry, and they’re very protectionist about it.”
Kuehl says negotiators can always hope and push for more access to the dairy market, but he’s skeptical any U.S.-India trade deal will include that.
