USTR: Trade talks aim to expand exports for U.S. soybeans
The U.S. Trade Representative says the Trump administration remains committed to strengthening U.S. soybean exports.
Ambassador Jamieson Greer says President Trump’s tariff strategy is bringing countries to the bargaining table.
“We’ve obtained commitments for tariff elimination or reductions for soybeans and soybean meal in Argentina, Cambodia, Ecuador, Bangladesh, Indonesia, and Taiwan,” he says. “We’re seeing diverse economies large and small opening up wanting to get their trade deficit down and looking to do it through soybeans.”
During a recent U.S. House Ways and Means Committee hearing, he said he expects China to follow through on its soybean purchases, but it will take time.
“We have found in past years that China can be an unreliable purchaser,” he says. “It’s a challenging situation for our farmers to be dependent on this market, but we have these commitments, solid commitments, and we’ll raise it to make sure they fulfill these commitments.”
Greer says the U.S. continues to prioritize finalizing new trade agreements and addressing barriers that limit exports of agricultural goods.
