Port of Long Beach announces partial closure of Carrack Avenue

Starting on 4 November, a section of Carrack Avenue in the Port of Long Beach will be closed for eight months to facilitate the relocation of utilities as part of the Pier B On-Dock Rail Support Facility construction, known as “America’s Green Gateway.”

This US$1.5 billion project aims to significantly boost cargo flow efficiency and sustainability within the port.

Work crews will be on-site to reroute pipelines within the Pier B project area. The closure is expected to affect Carrack Avenue between Pier B Street and Pier A Way, though Carrack Avenue south of Pier A Way will remain accessible. Detours will be available via Pier B Street and Pier A Way.

Currently, under phased construction, the Pier B rail yard project will progressively enhance environmentally friendly cargo movement and is projected for completion by 2032. Upon completion, the facility will more than triple on-dock rail capacity, enabling cargo to move directly between marine terminals and rail, alleviating road congestion and reducing emissions in the region.
